Recently my daughter has been looking for a new bedside table with ample storage for all her collections. She, unlike me, likes everything new, trendy and hip. All of which ends up costing a pretty penny. So when I came across a vintage suitcase at the thrift store for $2 and a TV table for $1. I knew just what to do.

I predrilled four holes inside on the bottom of the suitcase. I then attached it to the top of the TV table using 1" wood screws. I wanted to make the table portable so I made sure that the handle was facing on the top side of the table when folded down. I gave her a fresh coat of Satin Sherwin William paint in Overt Green SW 6718 and painted the handle a raspberry purple that complimented the colors in her curtains. I added some garage sale dog bookends that got a fresh coat of turquoise Rustoleum spray paint. IT was that simple!
Clients and friends of mine are always telling me their "want lists" so when my good friend Shey needed a petite sized desk for her daughter's bedroom without spending fortune I knew just what to do.

I had found the week earlier a curbside a desk and chair that fit the bill. The desk was sturdy and in overall good shape with the exception of a small chip in one of the drawers.

I painted the desk with leftover white paint to match Shey's all white shabby chic decor. The chair was painted in Sherwin Williams Nurture Green SW 6541. I used leftover pink, red, and cream spray paint for the hardware. By lightly spraying the red over the hot pink the colors blended to make a beautiful coral color in the rug. After one coat, I pumped the cream colored spray paint to achieve a splattered look.

Then took discontinued fabric books and cut strips of the swatches so that I could mix up the patterns and still have it cover the entire bottoms of the drawers while keeping a cohesive design. I glued the fabric using Satin Modge Podge ( can also use watered down white glue). Let dry and then lightly distressed chair with sandpaper.

Upcycled Heart ArtFor some time now I have been enamored with vintage signs. Tin, wood, plastic, neon, any material. I just love letters, quotes and shapes in general. I recently got a shipment of paints that came via courier on a wooden pallet. It just leaned against our garage door waiting for me to take it to the curb. I even put it in my car to bring it to a pallet recycling center. It never made it...

I used a crowbar to disassemble the pallet. The nails were long and the wood was tough. It was a serious workout! There's a reason why these pallets hold heavy weight, they're super tough.

I placed all the loose boards touching. I temporarily nailed a board perpendicular so that I could maneuver the pallet boards. Using a large piece of poster paper I folded kindergarden style a large heart. ( If it ain't broke don't fix it) . I still make hearts that way so that the are symmetrical. I traced the heart onto the boards and using a electric jig saw cut just inside the marker lines.

We flipped the boards over and nailed 1 by 1 boards to the back so that all the boards were attached to one another.

I used a yard stick and foldable ruler for the arrow. We nailed and glue them to the back.

It was then ready to be painted. I wanted to have this heart look old so the paint job needed to let the weathered wood show thru. I watered down some red paint and painted to entire red heart adding some pinker highlights to the edges. I then laid out letter and number stencils and spray painted the words "Let's fall in love 3-2-1". It didn't bother me that the spray paint went outside the stencil. I did all of this outdoors and with a mask on. I let it dry for an hour and brought it back inside and sanded it down to expose some of the natural wood color and further gave it a distressed look by rubbing a dark wax in areas and around the edges. If you don't have wax then show polish will do just make sure that you apply it with a rag.
Last weekend my family and I finally made it to one of Country Living magazine's Fair. I have been wanting to go for a few years now but it has always been held too far away. This year it was held at the Duchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck, New York so there was no reason to miss the event filed with handmade creations, homemade foods, informative demonstrations, captivating speakers and great antiques. We left Rochester at 4:45am and made it to Rhinebeck in 5 hours just as the gates opened. It poured the first day but that didn't dampen this treasure hunting family. We picked up a few items (well, a truckload and SUVfilled to the brim) and I had Father's day in mind for a few of my scores. These projects are super simple and need little to no experience with power tools....
Shoe last coat hook I found this basket overflowing with them so I picked a bunch up for $5. each. I love them so much I have a pair on my fireplace hearth.

I drilled a pilot hole in the toe of the shoe last. It was narrow so I needed to use a small bit. I screwed in a small C hook and drilled a hole in the back for a screw. You could also use a simple saw tooth picture frame hook just below the metal heel. Its as simple as that.

LEVEL KEY HOOK- I measured out every inch and drilled a small pilot hole for the L hooks. If you don't have a drill you can simply nail a hole and remove the nail giving you a start for the screw. I placed saw tooth hangers on the back. She had just left the Goodwill store next door and couldn't find anything to to help accessorize her mantle. I thought to myself "She couldn't find anything?" So I left Home Goods and took her frustration as a challenge. I texted her a picture of my thrift shop score. So this ones for you Margot. Hope you like the finished product. Just look for good bones and never mind about the color. You can always paint it!

My cute faded "little duck saying hello to a turtle" picture. You can see the price. I had big plans for this small investment. I loved the gold leaf frame but sadly my friend had to go....

I removed the faded image and began decoupaging tissue paper from a gift that I received. I first gave the frame a coat of old fashioned Modge Podge but any white glue would do. The first coat of the glue adheres the paper and the second acts as a topcoat.

As I mentioned earlier I loved the gold leafing so I cut the paper with an X-acto blade knife very carefully using the dark ridge as a guide. This could be done with wrapping paper, fabric, wallpaper or any other kind of paper.

After cutting the tissue paper, I gave the entire frame a thick coat of Modge Podge as a sealant. I carefully used the brush to even out all the creases and air bubbles. It goes on white and dries clear.

I have had these cute bee curtain pins for some time now. I never really used them on curtains but I thought they would make great decorative nails. I made a bow and stapled it to the back and found a beveled oval mirror at Micheal's that I tacked in.

I grouped the small mirror with a collection of other neutral colored artwork.

Total time spent on project - 1 hour and cost is under $10.

Every week I will be posting a simple up cycling project. I will give the time spent and overall cost. Let me know what you think.

Often a child needs a little inspiration to encourage them to spend time in their bedroom. This past week I had a blast painting a Superhero medley in a 6 year old boy's room. Danny art directed the entire room and let me know exactly who his favorite heros were. He was particularly inspired by seeing the Iron Man 3 movie and the filming of Spiderman 3 here in Downtown Rochester. After completion he told me, "I never wanted to leave my room." Music to my ears... No villains allowed!

Last week I was commissioned to paint a mural in an 8 year old boy's room. At our first meeting, myself and the boy's parents gathered in the all white room to discussed what they wanted me to paint. They told me that their son liked Lego's and computer games. No problem. I had painted lego murals before... They told me that their son's all time favorite video game was Minecraft and that he spend hours upon hours creating his kingdom. I had never heard of Minecraft before and they giggled. Hey, I have a daughter who's into fashion! It didn't take me long to figure out what this craze was all about. I went straight to my 11 year old nephew and his friends for a Minecraft consultation and tutorial. He taught me how the Minecraft's images are pixilated (old school to me) and how it all worked.... Six days later with the help of my assistant the white room was no more. It is now "The sickest room ever!" according to my 8 year old client....

Looking for an inexpensive way to add color or seating for your space? Well, the pouf is the perfect answer without emptying your wallet. I am completely obsessed with these little gems. I could put them in every room of my house if I could! A pouf by definition is a stuffed seat without any arms, legs or back and is most typically round. Traditional Morroccan pouf's are made from leather, and are the ideal combination of stitched leather, beautiful colors and function. Today, a pouf can be found in all colors, shapes and materials. The pouf has been popping up everywhere... and the latest pouf is ever more stylish than its Moroccan ancestors. ... So take a seat!

Often in a new home or addition storage spaces take a back seat in design and color to the rest of the house. Most of the time these small rooms have little to no color and the first inclination is to paint the built-in the same color as the trim. This young family wanted their custom millwork to draw attention, add charm, resemble a piece of furniture, withhold the wear and tears of two small boys and a busy family life while at the same time complimenting their love for antiques and all things old.

Here is Mia my assistant and supervisor on the unfinished built-in. I taped off all the walls and the floor using 3M blue painters tape. I prefer the one with the orange core. It is the best at preventing paint from bleeding under the tape.

I distressed the wood further by hammering the threads of a screw and using the back of the hammer to gouge the wood.

I wanted the built ins to look like they had been painted several times. In order to achieve that look I randomly painted red (Sherwin-Williams Red Bay 6321) and navy blue (Sherwin-Williams 6531 Indigo) undertones making sure that these colors pooled in the grooves and distressed areas. I then covered the two colors with a topcoat of 7610 Turkish Tile. It was important not to cover the the red and navy completely but to give it one light coat leaving brush stroke and areas where the under colors show through. Basically, paint like you are in elementary school missing spots... and don't bother using a good quality brush. It's the inconsistancy and uneveness that give it charm.

After the top coat of Turkish Tile is dry I took a heavy grit sandpaper and sand the edges and certain areas of the built in to expose further the under colors and natural wood.

To protect and further give the paint depth I painted a dark blue almost black glaze. I do this in small areas at a time. Wiping the glaze off in certain areas. This glaze stains the natural wood and creates yet another layer of color. As the glaze dries the brush strokes show. Below are details of multiple layers.

While cleaning out my mother's barn last weekend we came across this sad but cute armoire missing glass and in need of some repairs. Everyone thought that it should go in the donate/trash/sale pile but I had better plans for this beauty. I was in need for a new bookcase for my living room. Below are pictures of the armoire transformation from trash to treasure in very little time and for very little money. A weekend project that anyone can tackle with little effort.

1. Remove doors and hardware. Save for future project or in case I ever want to change back to armoire.

2. Clean out cobwebs and dust.

The New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox? Which one is better? Not for me to answer... But it is a close race between how many murals and sports related rooms I have requests for. So far there are more requests for a Yankee themed room here in Upstate NY. Here's a look at some of my favorite Yankee and Red Sox rooms. Feel free to weigh in your favorite....

Choosing the perfect paint color is no easy task. As a color consultant, I guide home and business owners with selecting the ideal color for their spaces. A while back Sherwin-Williams Paints came out with a small fan deck called Concepts in Color. I was enamored with this spectrum of gorgeoues new colors! Yes, I get excited about color. At first when you look at these small chips it’s easy to dismiss these colors as boring and dull but once on the wall you’re sure to fall in love. So get out your brushes and freshen up with these beauties. You can thank me later!

Recently a very good client renovated her house located on Lake Ontario creating one of the most beautiful homes that I have ever been in! Everything was new so I knew that there would be a laundry list of painting to tackle. The homeowner came to me with an idea of transforming her new playroom into a Dr. Seuss hideaway after becoming inspired by the recent release of The Lorax. I was especially excited because Chris Renaud the director is one my very close friends from Syracuse University. So this is dedicated to you Chris. Thanks for keeping Dr. Seuss’s artwork alive!

This week I was fortunate to paint a mural for a young boy named Jack. I have never seen someone soooo enthusiastic about Legos. It was my pleasure to bring the plain walls of his room to life. His favorite Lego police set was the centerpiece of the mural. It was painted on the wall opposite his bed so that every morning he could wake up and see the mural that he art directed. Bright colored legos are stacked high throughout the room that were color-matched from his new comforter and sheet set. Even thought Jack's tall bookcase (below) would be covering most of this stack we still painted the legos tall just in case he moved his furniture down the road. Taping off each block is time consuming but gives a clean crisp edge. All he needs is a few accessories from the new Lego store coming to Eastview Mall and he's all set. Enjoy your room Jack!

About ten years ago I painted in a neighbor’s house where I pretty much touched every wall with my brush. I faux finished both bathrooms, painted the vestibule, color-washed the kitchen and hallways, painted a mural in the laundry room and striped the dining room. After each job, I would say to my friend “Are you sure that you want me to paint MORE?” She would give me a hug and tell me that after a long day there was nothing better than coming home to a house that made her smile. As a thank you gift she gave me a children’s paperback book that I graciously accepted but admittingly never read until my daughter was born. The book was called THE BIG ORANGE SPLOT by Daniel Manus Pinkwater. The story was about a simple man named Mr. Plumbean who lives on a very “neat” street where all the houses look exactly the same. One day, a bird flew over Mr. Plumbean’s house and spilled a gallon of orange paint making a huge mess. The neighbors freak out and demand that Plumbean paint his house back to look like all the others on the street. Instead, Mr. Plumbean transforms his house into a rainbow of colors and images. It was what all his dreams were made of at the expense of mortifying his neighbors.

RESALE. It’s just paint and if you decided to move you can get a good deal on a five gallon bucket of antique white. That’s my answer. (I know my realtor mom and friends are cringing now). Just yesterday, I worked with a young couple that was building their “Dream House” and it wasn’t a small one by any means. After making the all the color choices she turned to me and asked “How will this look for resale?” I promptly replied with “The colors are perfect and why are you designing a house for the next owner? Who knows you might spend the rest of your life in your house. Why not enjoy it and have it the way YOU like it?” Im not talking about turquoise and red backsplash kitchen tiles with bright yellow cabinets. Something totally out there (which I know that I can make work) but keeping your home’s staples basic and don’t be afraid of using color on the walls. I think back to a friend who complained that she had no space for her three toddlers to play but had a huge unfurnished formal living room. I suggested that she turn that room into the kids playroom and she replied "What about Resale?” I stressed to her to enjoy her house and make it work for her family’s lifestyle. It would require a gallon of paint to transform the playroom back to that big empty room. Her children played countless hours in that room until they sold the house.

Now, I have a pretty “neat” house from the street but it wasn’t always like that. I remember my friend driving by and telling me “Well...., it’s in a great neighborhood.” Others would comment “You need a lot of vision for this one.” And “Why on earth is she leaving that great house for that piece of crap?” I heard it all. Now, once you step into my home there is no doubt about what kind of person(s) occupy my home. I have color everywhere. Collections of my favorite things, everything from matchbooks to silhouette portraits and in between. I mix new furniture with antiques from all eras. I surround myself in things that remind me of the special people and places that I love. No one has a house like me and I’m pretty sure no one would want it the way it is other than me. I change it constantly to rejuvenate, invigorate and inspire. “ My house is me, I am it. My house is where I like to be and it looks like all my dreams.”
